Located in Southern Africa, Mozambique is a country with a population of 21.2 million. After five centuries of Portuguese colonisation, Mozambique gained its independence in 1975. However, civil unrest exacerbated the country’s poor social and economic conditions until 1992 when political stability was reached. With an illiteracy rate of 61% and 74.1% of the population living under US$2 a day, poverty remains widespread in the country.
