07 January, 2012
We have teamed up with Action Challenge to launch two incredible London to Brighton challenges for World Hunger Day. Whatever your fitness level give your 2012 training some focus.

07 January, 2012

After an incredibly successful test cycle from London to Brighton last year we have stepped things up a gear for 2012. I hear you all groaning…

We have teamed up with Action Challenge to launch two incredible London to Brighton challenges for World Hunger Day and luckily for me (as I doing both of them!) you don’t need to be a fitness fanatic to do either… a step by step training plan for both is provided when you sign up.

The London 2 Brighton 100km Challenge

…starts in Richmond Park on Saturday 12 May and you can Walk it. Jog it or Run it as part of our World Hunger Day 2012 Challenges.

For you ultra marathon types this is just the challenge you will relish; however I am definitely walking it! After a few relatively easy training walks over the weekend I am pretty confident in making it to Brighton in 18 hours or thereabouts! Keeping awake might be the hardest part.

Registrations are now open and we would love a few more to join us. Don’t worry if don’t have anyone to sign up with, if you want to walk with the core ‘Team Hunger’ team just email me mark.speirs@thp.org and I will guide you through the short registration process and happily invite you along on our training walks.

You can follow my training progress on twitter… @markspeirs1

Registrations close at the end of January so don’t delay! The full route (highly secret as yet!) will be released in February 2012.

All participants in the challenge are invited to celebrate their achievements at The Royal Albert Hall for our World Hunger Day Concert 28 May, 2012. Tickets go on sale 14 January, 2012. If you raise £1000 (excluding Gift Aid) by the end of April we will send you two complimentary tickets to join us.

<a title="Press Release | The London 2 Brighton Challenge. Walk. Jog.
Leaving Alexander Palace around midnight on Friday 29th June most of us will be relaxing on the beach by dawn for breakfast on the 30th! Much less training is required for this challenge but a full training schedule is available once you have registered and I will happily guide you through this.

07 January, 2012

In 2006, The Hunger Project (THP) launched one of our most ambitious programmes to date: our Scale-Up Initiative in Ghana. The goal: to implement our Epicentre Strategy in Africa on a large enough scale so that it could be proven as a successful, cost-effective and replicable model that could be expanded and adopted by governments in their national development plans.

The project began in Ghana in partnership with the Robertson Foundation, who provided a $5 million grant that was combined with another $4 million in matching funds from other THP investors, to mobilise 36 epicentre communities in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

All 36 epicentres have now been constructed in Ghana and significant progress is being made on all fronts within the epicentre communities in terms of the provision of health care, food production, and access to microfinance services as well as increased capacity as a result of agricultural, health, literacy, training and more!

For example:

The epicentres’ health clinics are receiving and treating more than 20,000 people per year in the Eastern Region. Patients are treated for diseases like malaria and dysentery as well as other illnesses and injuries.

In addition to these services, the health care clinics are providing urgently needed preventive services such as child immunisations and maternal health care. Since 2009, more than 1,500 women per year are now receiving antenatal services.

To date, more than 17,000 community farmers have been trained in sustainable agriculture methods through THP’s programmes in food security. Farmers learn skills to improve their yields, including; soils management, row planting, use of fertilisers, etc.

Food Production: Farmers’ yields and income from crop sales have increased and production costs have decreased during the last season because of improved agricultural methods such as micro-dosing and access to low cost seeds, fertilisers and pesticides. A preliminary report from an impact survey conducted by the Monitoring and Evaluation officer in Ghana shows that many households are using the additional food production for family consumption – contributing to improved household food security.

2009

* Staple crops are maize, cassava and cocoa

These epicentres have mobilised nearly $60,000 in savings from over 6,300 community members. The average savings balance rose from $7 to 10, a resounding 43 percent growth in savings. Such savings are then used by women to help their families or develop their own businesses.

THP’s Monitoring & Evaluation has grown in data collection and reporting. Currently THP measures project activities and outputs (i.e. number of workshop participants, people served at the health clinics, kilos stored in the food bank, etc.). With the help of experienced consultants and feedback from THP Programme Country staff, a new framework for measuring outcomes and impact is being piloted in Ghana and Malawi. It will be expanded by the end of the year in all THP African Programme Countries.

How Are We Doing?

A long-term longitudinal study of the impact of our scale-up program in Ghana has been commissioned by the Robertson Foundation and is being undertaken by a team of academics from Yale University and the University of Ghana through Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA). IPA is partnering with THP to conduct an independent, third-party evaluation of the long term-impact of the Epicentre Strategy on health, nutrition, income, gender roles, social cohesion and education. At the end of 2008, baseline household surveys in both THP-mobilised areas and randomly selected comparison areas were completed and a follow-up survey will be completed in 2014. Read more.

What’s Next?

The Robertson Foundation has approved a new grant to The Hunger Project to provide three additional years of funding to support the 36 epicentres in the Eastern Region of Ghana on their path to self-reliance. This new grant of up to $1.8 million is a challenge match. You will hear more about this in the year ahead.

THP has hired a Partnership Building and Resource Mobilisation Officer in Ghana, who will be spearheading a new advocacy campaign to gain government recognition and support, as well as increased local financial resources.

We will also continue our conversations with the Government of Ghana following our President and CEO, Mary Ellen McNish’s May 2011 meeting with President Atta Mills.

Watch a video about how our Epicentre Strategy works.

As many of you know, 2011 was an amazing year for The Hunger Project UK with the launch of our World Hunger Day initiative.

Almost 5000 people attended our two key events during the year – Dionne Warwick & Friends and The Royal Ballet’s Gary Avis & Friends.

These truly inspiring ‘happenings’ proved beyond doubt that working in partnership with hugely talented people from the world of music and dance is a really powerful way of engaging with people and raising funds for the sustainable end of hunger and poverty.

Finally we’ve been able to make a considerable noise in the media too >>> Media Coverage

For me, the icing on the cake was seeing corporate sponsors stepping up in increasing numbers to support our projects and also creating opportunities for children and adults from primary school age to well beyond 80 to use their talents as performers and volunteers to make things happen.

The Hunger Project’s work continues to flourish globally on a ratio of 300 staff and 375,000 volunteers, the vast majority are living in the very poorest rural communities on earth themselves.

As you know, we currently only have two part-time staff in the UK and it thrills me to see what can be achieved by applying the same ratios of resourcing for what we are building here in the UK.

Take a quick look at our year in pictures for 2011 and see just a few highlights of what’s been going on! Thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far and, if you haven’t yet….well now is the time as we launch our ambitious plans for growth in 2012!

Coming up in 2012

Join Team Hunger on May 12-13 for a 100km endurance Walk, Jog or Run or at the end of June you might perhaps enjoy cycling in the moonlight from London to Brighton?

Also, please make a date in your diary to join us for our main Celebration Event on World Hunger Day 2012, which this year has moved to 28 May.

Dionne Warwick & Friends including an International All Star Cast along with our dear friends from The London Community Gospel Choir, the full orchestra of Southbank Sinfonia and the newly created World Hunger Day Choir will be headlining our most ambitious event yet.

Please make sure you save the date and book your tickets to join an anticipated audience of almost 6,000 people in the inspiring surrounding of the Royal Albert Hall.

Together we can end Hunger and Poverty for good.

Happy New Year!

Individuals can support organisations which seek to address HIV/AIDS through a rights-based approach.

Governments must put into place and enforce policies to empower at-risk groups, especially women and girls, so that they can protect themselves from contracting the virus. In addition, policies must be implemented to ensure universal access to treatment and care for people who are HIV-positive, as well as access to all other benefits citizens enjoy

Tackling the continued subjugation of women through coercive violence forces many women and girls into lives of isolation and despair. The Hunger Project's programmes are empowering women to take control of their rights. More

26 November, 2011

There is one universal truth, applicable to all countries, cultures and communities: violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable. – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

For 30 years, November 25th has been recognised by activists as a day to raise awareness about violence against women – violence defined by the United Nations (UN) as “acts capable of causing physical, sexual or psychological harm, whether in public or private life.” In 1999, the day was officially designated by the UN General Assembly as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Women and girls in villages worldwide experience gender-based violence daily in the form of discrimination, dowry murder, acid attacks, pre-natal sex-selection, honour killings, sexual harassment and abduction. It is unacceptable that nearly one in every three women has been subjected to these violent acts in her lifetime.

The continued subjugation of women through coercive violence forces many women and girls into lives of isolation and despair. That is why The Hunger Project (THP) programmes empower women to take control of their rights and lives and work together to sensitise communities to the rights of women.

In India, a specific initiative called the Panchayati Raj Campaign began in 2000 to empower women in local government to be effective change agents and lead their communities toward equity and self-reliance.

When 26-year-old Deepa Rajguru was elected as the Sarpanch (president) of Gram Panchayat (village council) Udvariya in Rajasthan, she had not yet attended a THP training for elected women and found it difficult to function in the male-dominated system. Men made all council decisions and resisted the participation of women by insisting that Deepa and the other women representatives sit at the back during panchayat meetings.

Nearly devoid of confidence in her position, Deepa participated in THP-India’s capacity building programme for elected women representatives (EWRs) and, with the support of other women in her panchayat, began voicing her opinion on a variety of issues.

Some of Deepa’s most successful initiatives have included sanctioning a pipeline to bring water to her village and promoting fiscal transparency from the panchayat – often in the face of incredible opposition and threats of violence against herself and her family. Yet she remains undeterred and resolutely committed to raising awareness about domestic violence in all forms. She works daily to economically empower women and educate them of their rights.

On November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, The Hunger Project calls on individuals and governments to find inspiration in Deepa’s story – inspiration to take actions to prevent senseless acts of violence that happen every day, the world over. Stand with us and the girls and women who have been victimised by gender-based violence. Stand with us and invest in programmes that empower women and develop their capacity to build better lives for themselves, their families and their entire communities.
