After an incredibly successful test cycle from London to Brighton last year we have stepped things up a gear for 2012. I hear you all groaning…

We have teamed up with Action Challenge to launch two incredible London to Brighton challenges for World Hunger Day and luckily for me (as I doing both of them!) you don’t need to be a fitness fanatic to do either… a step by step training plan for both is provided when you sign up.

The London 2 Brighton 100km Challenge

…starts in Richmond Park on Saturday 12 May and you can Walk it. Jog it or Run it as part of our World Hunger Day 2012 Challenges.

For you ultra marathon types this is just the challenge you will relish; however I am definitely walking it! After a few relatively easy training walks over the weekend I am pretty confident in making it to Brighton in 18 hours or thereabouts!  Keeping awake might be the hardest part.

Registrations are now open and we would love a few more to join us. Don’t worry if don’t have anyone to sign up with, if you want to walk with the core ‘Team Hunger’ team just email me mark.speirs@thp.org and I will guide you through the short registration process and happily invite you along on our training walks.

If you raise £1000 (excluding Gift Aid) by the end of April we will send you two complimentary tickets to join us.

Moonriders World Hunger Day Challenge

Give your 2012 fitness regime some focus by joining our Moonriders Night Cycle from Capital to Coast on one of the shortest nights of the year, 29 June, 2012.

Leaving Alexander Palace around midnight on Friday 29^th June most of us will be relaxing on the beach by dawn for breakfast on the 30th! Much less training is required for this challenge but a full training schedule is available once you have registered and I will happily guide you through this.

We completed a test cycle from Capital to Coast last year so I have plenty of advice if you are unsure or need some reassurance – get in touch mark.speirs@thp.org

As many of you know, 2011 was an amazing year for The Hunger Project UK with the launch of our World Hunger Day initiative.

Almost 5000 people attended our two key events during the year – Dionne Warwick & Friends and The Royal Ballet’s Gary Avis & Friends.

These truly inspiring ‘happenings’ proved beyond doubt that working in partnership with hugely talented people from the world of music and dance is a really powerful way of engaging with people and raising funds for the sustainable end of hunger and poverty.

For me, the icing on the cake was seeing corporate sponsors stepping up in increasing numbers to support our projects and also creating opportunities for children and adults from primary school age to well beyond 80 to use their talents as performers and volunteers to make things happen.

The Hunger Project’s work continues to flourish globally on a ratio of 300 staff and 375,000 volunteers, the vast majority are living in the very poorest rural communities on earth themselves.

As you know, we currently only have two part-time staff in the UK and it thrills me to see what can be achieved by applying the same ratios of resourcing for what we are building here in the UK.

Take a quick look at our year in pictures for 2011 and see just a few highlights of what’s been going on! Thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far and, if you haven’t yet….well now is the time as we launch our ambitious plans for growth in 2012!

Also, please make a date in your diary to join us for our main Celebration Event on World Hunger Day 2012, which this year has moved to 28 May.

Dionne Warwick & Friends including an International All Star Cast along with our dear friends from The London Community Gospel Choir, the full orchestra of Southbank Sinfonia and the newly created World Hunger Day Choir will be headlining our most ambitious event yet.

Please make sure you save the date and book your tickets to join an anticipated audience of almost 6,000 people in the inspiring surrounding of the Royal Albert Hall.

Together we can end Hunger and Poverty for good.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Woodbridge School’s Sixth Form Fashion Show in March 2012 will benefit The Hunger Project.

Many of Suffolk’s top boutiques will be involved in this annual fundraiser on 8 March, 2012 which is organised by the sixth form pupils and held at the Seckford Theatre.

Not only will you be able to enjoy the show and meet the models but you will get the chance to find out more about The Hunger Project and do a little shopping, as many of the boutiques will be exhibiting on the day.

There is one universal truth, applicable to all countries, cultures and communities: violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable. – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

For 30 years, November 25th has been recognised by activists as a day to raise awareness about violence against women – violence defined by the United Nations (UN) as “acts capable of causing physical, sexual or psychological harm, whether in public or private life.” In 1999, the day was officially designated by the UN General Assembly as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Women and girls in villages worldwide experience gender-based violence daily in the form of discrimination, dowry murder, acid attacks, pre-natal sex-selection, honour killings, sexual harassment and abduction. It is unacceptable that nearly one in every three women has been subjected to these violent acts in her lifetime.

The continued subjugation of women through coercive violence forces many women and girls into lives of isolation and despair. That is why The Hunger Project (THP) programmes empower women to take control of their rights and lives and work together to sensitise communities to the rights of women.

In India, a specific initiative called the Panchayati Raj Campaign began in 2000 to empower women in local government to be effective change agents and lead their communities toward equity and self-reliance.

When 26-year-old Deepa Rajguru was elected as the Sarpanch (president) of Gram Panchayat (village council) Udvariya in Rajasthan, she had not yet attended a THP training for elected women and found it difficult to function in the male-dominated system. Men made all council decisions and resisted the participation of women by insisting that Deepa and the other women representatives sit at the back during panchayat meetings.

Nearly devoid of confidence in her position, Deepa participated in THP-India’s capacity building programme for elected women representatives (EWRs) and, with the support of other women in her panchayat, began voicing her opinion on a variety of issues.

Some of Deepa’s most successful initiatives have included sanctioning a pipeline to bring water to her village and promoting fiscal transparency from the panchayat – often in the face of incredible opposition and threats of violence against herself and her family. Yet she remains undeterred and resolutely committed to raising awareness about domestic violence in all forms. She works daily to economically empower women and educate them of their rights.

On November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, The Hunger Project calls on individuals and governments to find inspiration in Deepa’s story – inspiration to take actions to prevent senseless acts of violence that happen every day, the world over. Stand with us and the girls and women who have been victimised by gender-based violence. Stand with us and invest in programmes that empower women and develop their capacity to build better lives for themselves, their families and their entire communities.
